BAU ROME
Being the capital city of Italy, Rome hosts all the principal institutions of the country, such as the Presidency of the Republic, the government and its single Ministries, the Parliament, the main judicial Courts, and the diplomatic representatives of all Italian regions, in addition to Vatican City and the Holy See. Rome also hosts the embassies and honorary consulates of over 200 countries and major international and worldwide political, scientific and cultural organisations, such as specialized Agencies of the United Nations like FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the World Food Programme (WFP), the NATO Defence College and ICCROM, the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property. Although the economy of Rome is characterized by the absence of heavy industry and it is largely dominated by services, high-technology companies (IT, aerospace, defense, telecommunications), pharmaceutical and food industries, research, construction, commercial activities (especially banking), and the huge development of tourism are very dynamic and extremely important to its economy. Rome’s main international airport, Fiumicino, is the largest in Italy, and the city hosts the head offices of the vast majority of the major Italian companies, as well as the headquarters of three of the world’s 100 largest corporations: Enel, Eni, and Telecom Italia.
Rome is currently a beta+ world city, along with Berlin, Stockholm, Athens, Prague, Montreal and Vancouver, to name a few. With a score of 24.1, this year Rome has been ranked as 32nd in the AtKearney Global Cities Index and it is the highest-ranking city in Italy (Milan is 44th).
With a GDP of US$144 billion (vs US$136 for Milan, according to the last PWC survey) the city has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and is one of the most important tourist destinations of the world, due to the incalculable immensity of its archaeological and artistic treasures; it is the world’s 6th most important center for fashion in the world, according to the 2013 Global Language Monitor after New York, Paris, London, Los Angeles, Barcelona and beating Milan, last year 12th in the ranking. Major luxury fashion houses and jewelry chains, such as Bulgari, Fendi, Laura Biagiotti and Brioni (fashion), just to name a few, are headquartered or were founded in the city. Also, other major labels, such as Chanel, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani and Versace have luxury boutiques. Finally, Rome hosts the Cinecittà Studios, the largest film and television production facility in continental Europe and the centre of the Italian cinema, where a large number of today’s biggest box office hits are filmed. Cinecittà is second only to Hollywood, with well over 5,000 professionals, and it is the only studio in the world with pre-production, production, and full post-production facilities on one lot, allowing directors and producers to walk in with their script and “walk out” with a completed film.
BAU has landed in Rome to develop special programs and opportunities aimed to enhance our students’ and faculty skills in the areas where the “Made in Italy” excellence is totally unmatchable, such as Art, Culture & Heritage Management, Architecture & Design, Legal Studies, Fashion, Luxury, Food and Hospitality, Cinema, Media, Communication and Entertainment, Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Family Business.
BAU Rome facilities boast a superb location in the heart of the city, at a walking distance from the best touristic places and monuments of the eternal city, such as the Colosseum, Trajan’s Market and Imperial Forums, Piazza Venezia, Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Navona and Termini railway station. The center is on the first floor of a Nineteenth Century building in a 500 square metre area fully equipped with more than 20 laptops, WIFI, Cisco videoconference system, online library, reception and waiting area, studio design lab, meeting room, three classes, general management office and a cafeteria which serves healthy meals and drinks.
