About The City: Located between the U.S. states of Maryland and Virginia, Washington D.C. is the capital of the U.S. The letters ‘D.C.’ stand for ‘District of Columbia.’ D.C. is not an independent state, nor is it located within the borders of any other state. Some argue that this separation is beneficial for the country, while others argue that it causes the city to be underrepresented. D.C. has a mayor, but no governor or senators. All U.S. federal agencies, federal government offices, and consulates, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court are located in Washington D.C. Between its political importance and the strange nature of its representation in the U.S. political system, Washington D.C. is seen as an important and unique city in the world.
